What Hurricane Irma did to Florida.
Hurricane Irma made landfall on Cudjoe Key in the Florida Keys on September 10, 2017 as a Category 4 hurricane — after earlier reaching Category 5 intensity with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph over the Caribbean. The storm's massive size meant that its wind field extended hundreds of miles — bringing hurricane and tropical storm-force winds to virtually every part of Florida as the storm tracked northward through the state.
Irma's impacts were statewide and unprecedented in their scope. The Florida Keys suffered catastrophic damage with approximately 25% of structures destroyed and 65% significantly damaged. Southwest Florida experienced storm surge and wind damage across Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties. Tampa Bay narrowly avoided a catastrophic surge event as the storm tracked east of the bay. Jacksonville experienced historic St. Johns River flooding as the storm moved northward. The storm caused an estimated $50 billion in damage across Florida.
For many Florida homeowners, Irma-related issues are still unresolved years after the storm — with litigation, assignment of benefits disputes, and long-tail insurance issues continuing to affect homeowners across the state. Roof Roof Direct helps homeowners understand their current options regardless of when the damage occurred.
How Irma affected different parts of Florida.
Hurricane Irma Recovery Support | Roof Roof Direct
The Keys bore the most catastrophic damage from Irma — with the Lower Keys experiencing direct landfall impacts. Thousands of structures were destroyed or severely damaged. Key West, Marathon, and Islamorada all experienced significant wind and surge damage.
Southwest Florida
Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties experienced significant storm surge and wind damage as Irma tracked northward up the Gulf Coast. Naples, Marco Island, and Cape Coral were among the most affected communities in Southwest Florida.
Tampa Bay & Central Florida
Tampa Bay narrowly avoided catastrophic surge as the storm tracked east of the bay — but Hillsborough, Pinellas, and surrounding counties still experienced significant wind damage. Inland Central Florida communities experienced tropical storm to hurricane-force winds and widespread tree damage.
North Florida & Jacksonville
Jacksonville and Duval County experienced historic flooding as Irma moved northward — with the St. Johns River reversing flow and flooding neighborhoods far from the coast that had never flooded before. Northeast Florida homeowners are still dealing with Irma-related flood issues years later.
